We reviewed the staffing arrangement of a hospital to iden risks and improve internal processes. Our assessment revealed a duplication and overproduction of services that had gone unnoticed. Through mathematical modeling and in-depth stakeholder interviews, we significantly improved efficiencies at this hospital.

Redesign of Outpatient Flow

The acute care outpatient services of a health facility were out of date and could no longer meet the complex needs of patients. By engaging with all stakeholders, we developed a plan to standardize processes and improve clinic experiences within 25 departments.

Staff Lean Management Program

Using Lean/Six-Sigma methodology, we developed a daily lean management system for a large academic hospital. The program has been deployed across the hospital with regular communication to senior leaders and frontline staff. The program was also designated “Leading Practice” by Accreditation Canada and was highlighted in the Harvard Business Review.

Strategic Planning: Performance Management Tool

We partnered with a not-for-profit organization to create a three-year strategic plan. Through this process, we developed its first balanced scorecard – at both the board of directors level and the operations level.

Research Project: Decreasing Pediatric Patient Anxiety

During hospital visits, anxiety among children can lead to delays in procedures, clinical risks and frustration for families. Using ethnographic research, and design-thinking principles, we implemented software to recreate the hospital environment in a child-friendly format. The application was piloted at a hospital in Hamilton, Ont., and tested at clinical trials.
